SUNSET OVER THE RIVER

A sunset over the Rhine is something special …

I’ m a big fan of Timelapse videos. Timelapse photography is a form of image processing to achieve effects. For example, movement processes are artificially accelerated. The picture frequency of the recording is reduced when the pictures are played back. This creates the timelapse effect. In normal playback, the impression is that the pictures run much faster.

SUNSET OVER THE RHINE AS TIMELAPSE PROJECT

In landscape photography, there are many elements that can be used to achieve good effects. So, for example, the flowing water, the passing clouds, the change from light to dark and, of course, the change of colors from golden yellow to blue. These elements bring tension into a timelapse video.

PREPARATION IS VERY IMPORTANT

first I must find the “location” for my project. Next I need to know the time and place of the sunset. There are many APPS on the Internet, for both Android and iOS Devices. I would like to recommend PhotoPills (a version for Android is now also available). Now I can calculate the number of pictures, which I need for my Timelapse video.

CALCULATION FOR TIMELAPSE
  • The clippings about 15 secs at 25 fps
  • Duration of the sunset about 45 min
  • This results in the 375 images at a recording interval of 8s
  • With a picture size of about 24 MB (RAW) I need 9GB on the memory card
Setup AND SETTINGS

After I found my “best” place for the recording, I set up there my tripod with the camera. I choose a wide-angle lens-  so I have a lot of scenery on my pictures. Aperture I choose  f/8. Focus is set to manual. I adjust the exposure manually (mode M). Now I only have to adjust the appropriate exposure time. Since the images are getting darker with increasing darkness, I will adjust the exposure a little bit higher (control histogram). There are different techniques for optimizing the transition from light to dark. But I will talk about later.

Let’s start

Now I start my timer with the calculated time interval and the number of pictures. I just have to wait until the 375 pictures are taken.

Here a teaser of the video:
